Eliciting continued engagement and connection to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra classical series through a transmedia experience that targets an audience of non-musicians

Remix the Symphony

How might we encourage a younger generation to connect with a classical music series despite preconceived notions of classical arts?

Remix the Symphony is a transmedia experience across digital and physical spaces that asks attendees to remix classical music into modern pieces. The experience encourages participants to engage with classical music in new ways, helping them understand the importance of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The results of the project were presented at the Popular Culture Association’s national conference in 2017 and featured on WFYI Public Radio.

By hosting community “Remix Nights” featuring writers and artists, the EMDD team found ways to engage nonmusicians around Muncie and Indianapolis with orchestral music through their own forms of art.
